How to make a Tuxedo Cocktail

You'll need
- Dry Vermouth1½ oz
- Gin1½ oz
- Maraschino liqueur1 dash
- Anis1 dash
- Orange bitters2 dashes
- Cherrygarnish
Instructions
- 1
Chill a cocktail glass: fill it with ice and water while you mix, then tip it out.
- 2
Pour dry vermouth, gin, maraschino liqueur, anis and orange bitters into a mixing glass (any sturdy glass works).
- 3
Fill it with ice.
- 4
Stir for 20-30 seconds, until the outside is cold to the touch.
- 5
Strain into the chilled cocktail glass.
- 6
Garnish with a cherry.
Why stir? Dry vermouth, gin and maraschino liqueur are clear, so a gentle stir over ice chills and dilutes them without clouding the drink.
Tuxedo Cocktail questions
What does a Tuxedo Cocktail taste like?
Mostly herbal and bitter, with a noticeable alcohol warmth. It's a strong drink at about 24% ABV once mixed.
How strong is a Tuxedo Cocktail?
About 24% ABV after mixing with ice, stronger than wine, lighter than a neat spirit.
What's the difference between a Tuxedo Cocktail and a London Town?
Both use gin, Maraschino liqueur and Orange bitters. The Tuxedo Cocktail adds dry vermouth and Anis. The London Town is the stronger of the two.
Should a Tuxedo Cocktail be shaken or stirred?
Stirred. Dry vermouth, gin and maraschino liqueur are clear, so stirring chills it while keeping it silky; shaking would cloud it with tiny bubbles.
What glass do you serve a Tuxedo Cocktail in?
A cocktail glass.
