How to make a Martinez Cocktail

To make a Martinez Cocktail, stir with ice and strain into a cocktail glass: 1 oz gin, 1 oz dry vermouth, 1 dash Triple sec and 1 dash Orange bitters. Garnish with cherry.

You'll need

1 drink

Instructions

  1. 1

Chill a cocktail glass: fill it with ice and water while you mix, then tip it out.

  2. 2

Pour gin, dry vermouth, triple sec and orange bitters into a mixing glass (any sturdy glass works).

  3. 3

    Fill it with ice.

  4. 4

Stir for 20-30 seconds, until the outside is cold to the touch.

  5. 5

Strain into the chilled cocktail glass.

  6. 6

    Garnish with a cherry.

Why stir? Gin, dry vermouth and triple sec are clear, so a gentle stir over ice chills and dilutes them without clouding the drink.

Martinez Cocktail questions

What does a Martinez Cocktail taste like?

Mostly herbal and bitter, with a noticeable alcohol warmth. It's a strong drink at about 24% ABV once mixed.

How strong is a Martinez Cocktail?

About 24% ABV after mixing with ice, stronger than wine, lighter than a neat spirit.

Is a Martinez 2 the same as a Martinez Cocktail?

Yes. Martinez 2 is another name for the Martinez Cocktail; the recipe on this page covers both.

What's the difference between a Martinez Cocktail and a Tuxedo Cocktail?

Both use gin, dry vermouth and Orange bitters. The Martinez Cocktail adds Triple sec, while the Tuxedo Cocktail uses Maraschino liqueur and Anis.

Should a Martinez Cocktail be shaken or stirred?

Stirred. Gin, dry vermouth and triple sec are clear, so stirring chills it while keeping it silky; shaking would cloud it with tiny bubbles.

What can I use instead of triple sec?

Cointreau or Grand Marnier will work.
