How to make a Tipperary
To make a Tipperary, stir with ice and strain into a coupe: 2 oz irish whiskey, 1 oz sweet vermouth and ½ oz Green Chartreuse.
You'll need
- Irish Whiskey2 oz
- Sweet Vermouth1 oz
- Green Chartreuse½ oz
Instructions
- 1
Chill a coupe: fill it with ice and water while you mix, then tip it out.
- 2
Pour Irish whiskey, sweet vermouth and green Chartreuse into a mixing glass (any sturdy glass works).
- 3
Fill it with ice.
- 4
Stir for 20-30 seconds, until the outside is cold to the touch.
- 5
Strain into the chilled coupe.
Why stir? Irish whiskey, sweet vermouth and green Chartreuse are clear, so a gentle stir over ice chills and dilutes them without clouding the drink.
Tipperary questions
What does a Tipperary taste like?
Mostly sweet and herbal, with a noticeable alcohol warmth. It's a very strong drink at about 29% ABV once mixed.
How strong is a Tipperary?
About 29% ABV after mixing with ice, close to a neat spirit.
What's the difference between a Tipperary and a Bobby Burns Cocktail?
Both use irish whiskey and sweet vermouth. The Tipperary adds Green Chartreuse, while the Bobby Burns Cocktail uses Benedictine. Both are stirred, but the Tipperary goes in a coupe and the Bobby Burns Cocktail in a cocktail glass. The Tipperary is the stronger of the two.
Should a Tipperary be shaken or stirred?
Stirred. Irish whiskey, sweet vermouth and green chartreuse are clear, so stirring chills it while keeping it silky; shaking would cloud it with tiny bubbles.
What glass do you serve a Tipperary in?
A coupe.
