How to make a Gin Smash

To make a Gin Smash, stir with ice and strain into a rocks glass: 2 oz gin, 1 oz carbonated water, ¼ oz simple syrup and 4 mint. Garnish with orange and cherry.

You'll need

1 drink

Pairs well with: Simple syrup · All syrups

Instructions

  1. 1

Pour gin and simple syrup into a mixing glass (any sturdy glass works).

  2. 2

    Fill it with ice.

  3. 3

Stir for 20-30 seconds, until the outside is cold to the touch.

  4. 4

Strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice cubes.

  5. 5

    Top with carbonated water.

  6. 6

    Give it one gentle stir.

  7. 7

Garnish with an orange wheel and a cherry.

Why stir? Gin is clear, so a gentle stir over ice chills and dilutes it without clouding the drink.

No simple syrup? Muddle 1 sugar cube with a splash of water in the mixing glass until it dissolves, then carry on.

About 20% ABV after mixing with ice, stronger than wine, lighter than a neat spirit.

Both use gin, carbonated water and simple syrup. The Gin Smash adds mint. The Gin Smash is stirred and served in a rocks glass; the Gin Cooler is built in the glass and served in a highball glass. The Gin Smash is the stronger of the two.

Can I make Gin Smashes in a batch?

Yes. For 6 drinks, mix 12 oz gin and 1¼ oz simple syrup, plus muddled mint in a jug and chill it. Add 4 oz of cold water to stand in for the dilution from stirring. Top each glass with carbonated water as you serve, so it stays fizzy.

What glass do you serve a Gin Smash in?

A rocks glass.
