How to make a Brooklyn
To make a Brooklyn, stir with ice and strain into a cocktail glass: 2 oz rye whiskey, 1 oz dry vermouth, ¼ oz Maraschino Liqueur and 3 dashes Angostura Bitters. Garnish with maraschino cherry.
You'll need
- Rye Whiskey2 oz
- Dry Vermouth1 oz
- Maraschino Liqueur¼ oz
- Angostura Bitters3 dashes
- Maraschino Cherrygarnish
Instructions
- 1
Chill a cocktail glass: fill it with ice and water while you mix, then tip it out.
- 2
Pour rye whiskey, dry vermouth, maraschino liqueur and Angostura bitters into a mixing glass (any sturdy glass works).
- 3
Fill it with ice.
- 4
Stir for 20-30 seconds, until the outside is cold to the touch.
- 5
Strain into the chilled cocktail glass.
- 6
Garnish with a maraschino cherry.
Why stir? Rye whiskey, dry vermouth and maraschino liqueur are clear, so a gentle stir over ice chills and dilutes them without clouding the drink.
Brooklyn questions
What does a Brooklyn taste like?
Mostly herbal and sweet, with a noticeable alcohol warmth. It's a very strong drink at about 28% ABV once mixed.
How strong is a Brooklyn?
About 28% ABV after mixing with ice, close to a neat spirit.
What's the difference between a Brooklyn and a Balmoral?
Both use rye whiskey, dry vermouth and Angostura Bitters. The Brooklyn adds Maraschino Liqueur, while the Balmoral uses sweet vermouth.
Should a Brooklyn be shaken or stirred?
Stirred. Rye whiskey, dry vermouth and maraschino liqueur are clear, so stirring chills it while keeping it silky; shaking would cloud it with tiny bubbles.
What glass do you serve a Brooklyn in?
A cocktail glass.
