How to make an ABC

To make an ABC, layer carefully into a shot glass: ½ oz Amaretto, ½ oz Baileys irish cream and ½ oz cognac.

You'll need

1 drink

Instructions

  1. 1

Pour the ingredients into a shot glass one at a time, heaviest first (usually the sweetest, lowest-proof liquid) and lightest last.

  2. 2

Pour slowly over the back of a bar spoon held just above the drink, so each layer floats on the one below.

  3. 3

Serve straight away, before the layers mix.

Why pour slowly? Heavier liquids sink, so pouring gently over a spoon lets each layer float on the one below.

ABC questions

What does an ABC taste like, and is it sweet?

Yes, it's on the sweet side: it's mostly sweet and creamy, with a noticeable alcohol warmth. It's a very strong drink at about 27% ABV once mixed.

How much alcohol is in an ABC?

About 27% ABV after pouring, close to a neat spirit.

What's the difference between an ABC and a French Connection?

Both use Amaretto and cognac. The ABC adds Baileys irish cream. The ABC is layered and served in a shot glass; the French Connection is built in the glass and served in a rocks glass. The French Connection is the stronger of the two.

What can I use instead of amaretto?

Orgeat syrup (no alcohol) or Frangelico will work.

What glass do you serve an ABC in?

A shot glass.
