Warm a mug by filling it with hot water, then empty it.

Heat cocoa powder, simple syrup, cornstarch, water and milk gently in a small saucepan (or the microwave), stirring, until smooth and steaming, without letting it boil.

Pour it into the warmed mug.
Why heat it gently? Milk, cream and chocolate scorch if they boil.
No simple syrup? Stir 1 cup sugar into the warm drink until it dissolves.
